What do you get when an artist, a rebel, an athlete, an adventurer, a chocolate cake eater, and a goddess walk into a juice bar?

Hi, I’m Mc Caren.

For decades, an early childhood voice trauma separated me into two versions of myself -

the terrified-of-speaking perfectionist and professional rule-follower; and the wild, irreverent, highly closeted singer and artist.

Then one day, while in a class with the Brothers Koren, I experienced nothing short of a miracle. Within ONE somatic vocal toning exercise, my inner 5-year-old was scream-singing the ugliest sounds she’d ever allowed herself to make, releasing a lifetime of shame and anger.

The Brothers helped me sound my way back into my body, “release the sounds I swallowed”, and love on the parts of me that I’d hidden or exiled. I was silent no more.

Almost overnight, I was speaking up, singing in front of real people, expressing myself in ways I never thought possible, and boldly going after what I wanted.

Experiencing thE healing power of my own voice was the catalyst for becoming a sound therapist.

It was challenging – but important to me – to represent the full spectrum of who I am in my work. It doesn’t feel like I’m birthing a new business with Sol Sonic. It feels like I’m rebirthing the whole of me including all of my beautiful, courageous, and brave selves whose footsteps over my lifetime took me to this very moment.

It’s never too late to experience a life that resonates with your whole self.

I believe we have the power to self-heal by going inwards to meet ourselves in the stillness of our wild silence. Spending time there is where we find our currency, our medicine, our truth. I’d love to guide you there.

What’s in a name?

I was named after a park in Greenpoint, Brooklyn that my mom used to play in as a kid. I almost ended up as Lizavetta-Ann, which makes me feel like I got away lucky.

Since birth, I had to defend my unconventional name. I was made fun of by kids and had to handle looks of dismay and confusion from adults who were certain I was joking or perhaps mistaken about my name. I particularly disliked sharing my name with the other “Mc” in town (of fast-food fame).

Friends still spell my name wrong. I can’t be found in digital databases if you omit the space between the c’s. And technically, one C needs to be capitalized. I did let go of insisting the spelling required “little c in the air” in second grade. Despite all that, I’ve never met another Mc Caren, and I feel like I’ve earned the right to the name and the possible claim, that I am the only one (but please send me any that come your way).

Some of you may know me as BAM

(Bad Ass Mother-effer), which was the name I gave the archetype of my future self (think Mad Max’s Furiousa and Lara Croft) who I called upon when I needed an extra dose of inner strength. She first arrived on the scene with a killer windmill kick, knife in her thigh holster, wielding her sword, and ready to assist me in achieving the task at hand.

I’ve since learned that strength can be found in acts of self-love, self-trust, and being gentle and compassionate, rather than acts of force. So, I softened up her image with a cozy knitted cape, fluffy slippers, and her sword now wields self-knowledge. BAM invites the conflict (be it inner or outer) to sit at the fire, letting presence, trust, and awareness be the path to strength.

Sollandra Mc Caren Avalon Sound Meditattion Louisville

In my work as a sound meditation practitioner,I go by Sollandra, or Sol.

I received the name in a sacred ceremony in Peru, on the banks of the Urubamba River after releasing deeply buried anger from a childhood trauma and jumping into the sacred waters. I like that it contains my mom’s name Sandra, which feels like a thread connecting my life to hers. The name solidifies for me, that my healing is her healing, as well as my children’s healing, the healing of my lineage, and that of future generations.

Sollandra represents my fully embodied self, and I’m enjoying stepping into that version of me.

So, what’s in a name? Can a name ever contain the whole of me, or does it expand and stretch to hold all of ME?

about mc caren avalon

Mc Caren is a dynamic creature of this planet with a penchant for adventure; loyal to Earth but well-connected to Source; a visionary who is a walking Universe of ideas; a knowledge-seeker and creator of worlds who loves science and believes in magic equally; a multi-faceted being who embodies the liberation of self-expression; an artist whose medium is storytelling and whose canvas is life; a creative using any means necessary to express the vision - sound, music, dance, movement, breath, voice, poetry, photography, collage, video, fabric, clothing, song, love, truth; a champion for self-love being the path to a strong, inner foundation; and a lover of deep breaths that bridge us back home.

Raised to the beat of the New York City street, Mc Caren received her street cred degree in urban symphonies.

She was born to a badass mother who was a systems analyst for the stock market by day and a textile artist by night. Her dad, a jazz musician and child prodigy on the piano, played at Count Basie’s pool parties in Queens with his 3-piece high school jazz band.

As a teen, Mc Caren got the best education in house music and drum and bass by sneaking into NYC clubs to dance in the dark womb of sound and vibration, not knowing at the time that this was musical history in the making.

She holds degrees in Photography and French Language from NYU and is fluent in cursing.

After being a closet singer, songwriter, and musician for 8 years, Mc Caren experienced a miracle with the Brothers Koren.

Within ONE somatic vocal toning exercise, she released the monstrous sounds of pain and anguish that her body and psyche had been holding on to for decades, stemming from a young voice trauma. It was one of the most empowering experiences she’d ever had; reclaiming her birthright to find healing and joy through the power of her own voice.

This profound gift ultimately led her to start her own sound therapy business, Sol Sonic. Incorporating her background in art, music and events planning, with her training in sound therapy, meditation, breathwork, Reiki, and yoga, Mc Caren creates sonic journeys to help others access the keys to their own self-healing, and liberate their truest self-expression.
